Who Do You Think You Are?

DNA Inspiration

-

Thank you for Debbie Kennett’s article regarding DNA testing kits (December). I have been intrigued by the idea of getting a test to further my research into my family tree, but I haven’t yet taken the plunge.

I mistakenly believed that the test only showed geographical information regarding my ancestors. As my tree is localised within the north-east and Cumbria (my paternal side for six generations, and my maternal side for nine generations), I wasn’t sure there was reason for me to do it. Some have emigrated to Canada and Australia, but most stayed close to where they were born. Now I understand that DNA tests can also link you to individuals already in the company’s database, I might add one to my Christmas list.

The information in the article regarding the different type of tests and the comparison of the companies that offer them was very informative. There’s a lot of information to take in so I am sure I’ll have to read it again before I make my decision, but I think I’ll probably go with AncestryDNA as they have the biggest database and I already have a subscription with them. I can’t wait to see what my DNA will reveal.
