The official publication of government record (online at thegazette.co.uk) reveals a wealth of information about ‘ordinary’ citizens from 1665 to today, including changes of name; notices of aliens becoming naturalised subjects; declarations of business partnerships dissolving and bankruptcies; court summons; and promotions and awards in the armed forces.
Absent Voters During the world wars, service personnel were registered under separate Absent Voter Lists. These provide their civilian address, service number and regimental details, useful for researching their military history. Ancestry has some at bit.ly/anc-absent.
