I Can’t Find My Relatives’ Marriage!
There are various reasons why the marriage of two ancestors may not be apparent. If you’re only looking at digitised sources, of course, it may not yet have been digitised. They may have been married in a nonconformist establishment, so check their records, or in an ‘unofficial’, irregular or private ceremony. Where a woman was already pregnant, or if she was a minor, a couple may have married in a different parish to their home parish, so don’t discount records from further afield. And, of course, some couples lived as if they were married, with a woman taking her partner’s name and having his children, without going through any form of ceremony at all – it was not that uncommon.
