Richard Brookes bit.ly/richardbrookes

One of my ancestors, Richard Brookes, married an Ann

Fox (1781–1865) in 1813 in Bampton, Oxfordshire. Richard appears to have died before 1841 as he is not mentioned in the census of that year.

Richard seems to have had a brother named Joseph Brookes (Joseph visits Ann on the 1851 census in Bampton). Joseph was listed as being born around 1777 in Southall Green, Middlesex.

Presumably Richard was also from Southall Green, but I can find no record of either. Apart from Joseph’s appearance in 1851, he too disappears.

Doreen Johnston, born in South Africa bit.ly/doreenjohnston

On 22 December 1917 my grandmother Doreen Agnes Johnston was born in Johannesburg. She met my grandfather, John Daniel Jones, while he was serving in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War.

The couple married in Cape Town, and once the war was over Doreen made the long journey by ship to Southampton and on to Nefyn in North Wales to start family life.

Doreen lost both of her parents when she was young – her mother died of breast cancer and I think her father was killed in a railway accident. She was brought up by her grandparents, then lived with her cousins.

I’m keen to learn more about Doreen’s family. Does anyone have any advice for researching South African ancestors? LintottM

Nicholas Jones, born in Barbados bit.ly/nicholasjones

I am researching Nicholas Jones, who was born c1872 in Barbados but later moved to Liverpool.

I have a record of his marriage to Frances Clifton in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, in 1899. I also have him on the 1911 census and the 1939 Register.

His marriage record identifies Robert Jones as his father, who was deceased by the time of the wedding. Robert was a solider, which has led me to think that maybe his father was serving in Barbados when he was born.

I know that Nicholas was a sailor, and I have several crew lists for him. Can anyone help me track him earlier than 1899, or ideally to make the link to Robert? MikePhillips50

Coal merchant photograph bit.ly/coalmerchant

thinks it is my great grandfather and my great grandfather’s nephew, so I’m trying to work out which of us may be right.

Useful information to this argument is that my great grandfather was born in 1904, while his nephew was born in 1929. My great grandfather was born in 1879. farmerancestry

Death of Alice Hibbard bit.ly/alicehibbard

I can’t find a death record for Alice Hibbard (born 1882 in Idlicote, Warwickshire) that fits into the information I already have about her. Hibbard can also be spelled Hibberd/Hibbert/Hibbord/ Hibbort. Apparently she was considered the black sheep of the family.

The last reference to Alice I can locate is on the 1911 census at Stratford-upon-Avon Workhouse with children Elsie and Frederick Hibbard, both illegitimate.

She had another illegitimate son named Albert Ernest Plummer Hibbard in 1903, who was living with his grandparents in 1911. We assume Plummer may have been the father. katebenn
