George Golding bit.ly/george-golding

George Golding was born in c1767 in Whitchurch, Hampshire, being baptised on 6 Jan 1768 at All Hallows in Whitchurch. He went on to marry a woman named Elizabeth. I can find no details of their marriage, so have no idea of her maiden name. They went on to have at least six children: Mary (1795), Martha (1798), Harriot (1801), George (1803), Thomas (1806) and Letitia (1807). Martha is a bit of a mystery, but what I would really like to know is the details of George and Elizabeth’s wedding. I have tried the obvious search engines with no luck, so desperately need the expertise of people on this board. If it helps, Elizabeth’s burial record in Mar 1840 recorded her age as 77, suggesting she was born in 1763. SDV

Possible date of photo? bit.ly/johnor-abraham

Hello. I am trying to identify the gentleman in this picture

(right). I was told it was the father of my 3x great grandfather

Thomas and that his name was Abraham.

However, since being told this I have proved the father of my 3x great grandfather Thomas was actually called John, but Thomas did have a brother called Abraham. So what I am trying to decide is if this is a picture of father John or brother Abraham? More info: father: John Lusby 1790–1859; brother: Abraham Lusby 1826–1904. Thanks. Lusby84

Johanna Howes bit.ly/johanna-howes

My grandmother, Johanna (Annie) Howes, was supposedly born 24 July 1890 in High Street, Boro, London. I have never been able to find her birth registration or baptism to confirm this (I believe she might have been brought up as a Catholic). Her parents were Ernest Edward Howes (1869) and Mary Ann (Bray). They married in Newington, London, in 1888 and by 1891 they had two children – Arthur Edward (1888) and Johanna. I can’t find the Howes family anywhere in the 1891 census. In the 1901 census, the family are living in Southwark, but although all the other children are present, Johanna and her younger sister Louisa (1892) are nowhere to be found!

In 1911 the family, including Johanna and Louisa, are all together. My questions are: (1) Where is Johanna’s birth registration? As far as I know all her of siblings were registered. (2) Where are the Howes family in 1891? (3) Where are Johanna and Louisa in 1901? Any help would be greatly appreciated. GillJones

17th-century research bit.ly/17th-cent

Mary Hobbs and Thomas Swan married in Woburn in 1691. The PRs only record date and their names, nothing more. Neither were baptised in the town so I’m on the hunt for their respective beginnings with absolutely no information – yay! Bearing in mind Woburn is on the borders of Bucks and Northants and Herts, do you have any rules of thumb for narrowing down the possibilities? And, knowing spelling wasn’t high on the list of priorities during this period, would you add Hebbs to the list with Hobbs?

Finally, does anyone know why people used aliases so often? The Woburn PR has many people using them. Does it hint at bastardy and parentage? Clearly they aren’t hiding if the priest knows about them.

Inquest of death bit.ly/joe-johnson-inq

Hello. My 3x great grandfather Joseph Johnson (1841–1870) died as a young father in March 1870 in Aston near Bampton in Oxfordshire. On his death certificate it says a burst blood vessel as cause of death. He presumably died while working in the fields, because his occupation was a shepherd. On his death certificate it also says there was an inquest. I was wondering where I might be able to find a copy of this inquest? Will Mundy
