Who Do You Think You Are?

Who was Albert’s mother?

-

QI’ve hit a brick wall with one of my ancestors Albert Buckingham Killick. He was born on 20 February 1877 to a Fanny Buckingham. Albert appears on the 1881 census with Margaret (née Buckingham) and Henry Killick recorded as nephew. On the 1891 census he is still living with Margaret and Henry Killick, but is listed as son.

Who was Albert’s mother, Fanny Buckingham, and when did Albert die? Kayleigh Roffey

ALittle is known about Fanny Buckingham, other than that she appears to have been related to Margaret Killick. By searching for the marriage of William and Margaret Killick and censuses, I discovered that Margaret was born at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, the daughter of William Buckingham. Cheshunt baptisms show that Margaret was the youngest of a large family; however, I couldn’t find a baptism for a sister named Fanny or Frances.

However, a further search of censuses, together with General Register Office indexes, revealed that Margaret’s brother, John, had a daughter, Fanny, born in 1859. Fanny was living with her mother in 1871, but could not be found in the 1881 census. It seems likely that this Fanny Buckingham was Albert’s mother and Margaret was his great aunt.

In 1901, Albert was a soldier based in Dorchester; he married Eliza Weldon at West Fordington later that year. He was living in North Finchley in 1911. In the 1939 Register, there’s an Albert Killick listed among the patients at Napsbury Hospital, London Colney, with a date of birth given as 20 February 1875. Napsbury Hospital was the Middlesex county asylum. Despite the disparity in the year of birth, it seems likely that this is your Albert. The hospital’s records are held at London Metropolitan Archives. Albert’s death is probably that registered at St Albans, December quarter 1943, aged 66 years. Katherine Cobb
