Resources
Peter found these resources a great help in his research
CHILDREN’S HOMES
w childrenshomes.org.uk
If, as Peter did, you discover that one of your ancestors grew up in a children’s home, you can get some useful pointers on where to find out more about the specific institution – including admission and other records – from this useful website. Its owner Peter Higginbotham also runs workhouses.org.uk.
METROPOLITAN POLICE RECORDS
w nationalarchives.gov.uk Metropolitan Police records are held at The National Archives (TNA) in Kew and many can be downloaded (currently for free) from TNA’s website. Ancestry also has some pension records.
MILITARY RECORDS
Records of a forebear’s military career can tell you a lot about their life. You can find records of service, military pensions and more at such sites as ancestry. co.uk, findmypast.co.uk and forces-war-records.co.uk.
