Electricity standardised

The Central Electricity Board was set up this year to standardise power. Previously 600 supply companies and local authorities had operated with a variety of voltages and frequencies.

The board determined which power stations would be selected to generate electricity, as well as providing transmission lines.

This was the beginnings of the National Grid. Within seven years half the homes in the country would be lit by electricity.
