Who Do You Think You Are?

Where are my Tebbutt family in the 1921 census?

-

QThe 1921 census was a big turnoff for me because I couldn’t find my father’s entry. I know where he and his family were living. I have even got a picture of them outside the house (pictured). I inputted their details, but nothing came up. Then I explored the street where they lived, but there was no listing for their house.

Was this a failure by my grandfather to complete the census record (he did fill in the 1911 census), or was the record lost or unable to be deciphered? His name was Harry Tebbutt and he lived with his wife, Florence Elizabeth, and sons, Charles William and Thomas Arthur. They should have been living at 13 Thornton Street, Kempston, Bedfordshire. Any help would be appreciated!

AAt first glance it does seem that your Tebbutt family are missing from the 1921 census – as is their house, which is unlikely. If your grandfather completed the 1911 census, then there is no reason not to expect that he filled in the 1921 census too. With the transcription issues (see who do you think you are magazine. com/ news/ find my past-promises-to-f ix-1921-censustranscript ion-errors ), you need to think outside the box and try different spellings.

In fact, finding the family on the 1911 census gave me the most important clue. With both censuses, we have the household schedules and so it is possible to see the handwriting off whoeverher completed the schedule. Looking at the handwriting in 1911 I could see that a transcriber might read “Tebbutt” as “Jebbutt” or “Lebbutt”. Jebbutt didn’t bring any entries up, but I hit the jackpot with Lebbutt. Their schedule just says Thornton Street (no number), but the one before them is 11 and the one after is 15, so it was just an error by them or the enumerator not to include a house number.
