An age-blind Theatre Royal Windsor production of Hamlet starring Sir Ian McKellen began rehearsals on Monday.

The theatre is the first in the country to start rehearsals for a new production as the country eases out of lockdown. Last week the Government announced theatres can reopen from Saturday, July 4, but not for live performances.

Rehearsals for the play will take place with social distancing alongside screening, hygiene and PPE.

Sir Ian McKellen first took on the role of Shakespeare's troubled prince 50 years ago and is now reviving the role at the age of 81.

He said: “I feel lucky to be working again, thanks to Bill Kenwright’s inspiring optimism and Sean Mathias's invitation to re-examine Hamlet, 50 years on from my first go. So now we will meet again. Don’t know when but do know where – Theatre Royal Windsor.”

Director Sean Mathias, who will also direct The Cherry Orchard at the theatre, said: “I have always been a fan of ensemble work so when Bill Kenwright asked me to be his artistic director at Windsor I saw a perfect opportunity to create a company and direct two of the greatest plays ever written.”

Bill Kenwright added: “Sean, Ian and myself have been planning this season for some time now, and the truth is I couldn’t bear to see it slip away.”

The co-directors of the theatre said they would await advice from the Government about reopening the venue.

A statement from Jon and Anne-Marie Woodley said: “We are thrilled to announce that our postponed summer season of Hamlet and The Cherry Orchard directed by Sean Mathias has now started rehearsals this week.

“Shakespeare’s Hamlet will star Sir Ian McKellen in the title role and will reopen our beautiful theatre at a date to be announced.

“Of course, the safety of our audiences, performers and staff is paramount and we await the Government providing suitable guidance on when and how theatres can safely reopen.”
