Dorking come from behind to seal deserved victory

Slough Town FC

Dorking Wanderers 3, Slough Town 1

The Rebels failed to build on their first half lead as they fell to their first defeat of the season, losing 3-1 at Dorking Wanderers on Saturday.

Slough Town were once again competitive, as they had been in their narrow 1-0 victories over Dartford and Hemel Hempstead Town, but goals from Edward Harris Alfie Rutherford and a wonder-strike from Jason Prior saw the hosts come from behind to claim the points at Meadowbank.

An own goal from Harris had given the visitors a precious lead to protect, but Dorking responded well to pick up their second league win of the season.

As you might expect from a side that had started the season with two victories, Slough started well, and Sean Fraser’s early effort was well blocked by the Dorking defence in the opening minutes. They then edged in front midway through the half when a cross ricocheted off Harris and bobbled past Slavomir Huk in the Dorking goal.

But their lead didn’t last for long as minutes later Rutherford outmuscled his marker and drove low beyond Turner.

The home side then took the lead shortly before halftime when an unmarked Harris atoned for his earlier OG to power in a header from a corner at the back post.

Dorking then stepped up the tempo after the break, and Turner needed to be alert to hold onto Prior’s driven shot, while Wesley Fogden’s close-ranger header flew over the crossbar on the hour mark.

The Rebels stayed in the game, however, and Matt Lench failed to beat the Dorking wall from a wellplaced free kick, but it was the hosts who put the game to bed with 15 minutes to play, Prior finishing off Slough’s challenge with a fantastic run and shot past Turner.

Lench tried to reduce the deficit late on but his longrange strike flew well over the crossbar.
