Positive COVID-19 test in playing squad checks momentum
Windsor chairman Kevin Stott is slightly concerned about the loss of momentum brought about by a recent positive COVID-19 test among the club’s playing squad.
Under Hellenic League rules Windsor are now prevented from playing matches until November 7 at the earliest, another unwanted setback in an already difficult season.
Windsor had been due to visit bottom of the table Shrivenham on Saturday and were also due to host Chalvey Sports in the Challenge Cup this weekend. Both matches will now have to be rearranged. They are due to get back to league action at Lydney Town on Saturday, November 7.
The squad member in question tested positive ahead of a planned holiday but has so far been asymptomatic. Stott added that the virus hadn’t been passed on to any other member of the playing or coaching staff.
Speaking on Monday he said: “On the COVID front, one of our people tested positive. They’re fine. But because of Hellenic League guidelines we can’t play again until November 7.
“The member of staff is fine. They were asymptomatic. They had to take a test because they were going to go on holiday. It’s a frustration but it’s a sign of the times really.
“We hadn’t had the best of starts to the season, so we wanted some momentum. Shrivenham away looked like a winnable game, but I guess it’s just the nature of the circumstances we find ourselves in. I’m certain that the season will be punctuated by this sort of thing.
“We’re no different to anyone else. It’s just the way it is now. There is a bewildering away of regulations, but we’re all trying to deal with something we’ve never had to deal with before. Everyone is feeling their way to a certain extent.”
Royalists boss Mark Cooper added: “Of course we wanted to keep playing but it’s been taken out of our hands. We’ve now got a couple of weeks to refresh. What we need to do in this time is work on a few things and keep the boys sharp before getting back to it. Given the start we’ve had to the season, these were two games we could have built up some momentum with.
“Results haven’t gone our way recently but it’s still early on in the season and we know what we’re capable of. We can’t get too disillusioned when things go wrong and get too carried away when results go for us. We will just use this break to work on our football.”
