Maids plummet after suffering heaviest defeat

It has not been the best of weeks for Maidenhead Hockey Club after a 6-1 weekend defeat to Woking 1sts dropped them to eighth in the MBBO Premier Division 2 West.
Nathan Warwick got their only goal at the fourth-placed Surrey side, a result which sees Maidenhead plummet after a promising start earlier in the season.
Two wins and a draw saw them creep up to second in the league but Saturday’s third defeat on the bounce continued a poor late run of form.
Their mood would have been made even worse after this week’s announcement from England Hockey, in wake of the Government’s month-long lockdown which starts today (Thursday).
The body informed clubs that the sport will not return until after the lockdown, December 4 at the earliest.
This will sour the taste of the Maids, who would have been looking to bounce back quickly after their Woking thrashing – their heaviest defeat of the season.
The 6-1 loss followed the previous Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Tulse Hill & Dulwich 1sts.
England Hockey said in a statement: “The latest Government announcement orders all sports facilities to close and therefore club and other community hockey activity is suspended until the game is in a position to resume.”
It added on Sunday that it would be communicating with all clubs ‘in the coming days’ and has asked for patince from clubs and players.
