Independent businesses are at the heart of our community.

They feed us, quench our thirst, cut our hair, pamper us, clothe us and entertain us. They even help us find the perfect present and, occasionally, something special for ourselves.

But the events of 2020 have left many of these businesses facing an uncertain future – and they need our help.

The lockdown may be over, but things are far from back to normal and shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants face a make-or-break December.

Many of these firms have been left frustrated by the decision-making at a national and local level (including those who expected more from the council’s Christmas parking policy, see p5).

But throughout two lockdowns and ever-changing restrictions, independents have continued to show they can adapt to whatever this year throws at them.

Distancing rules have been introduced, screens have been set up, staff members have found creative ways to make space and new takeaway services have emerged as businesses find ways to serve their customers while keeping them safe.

Of course, not everyone will feel comfortable going to shops or restaurants, but independents are also changing the way they operate so their products and services are just a click of a mouse or a phone call away.

We all have a duty to be sensible and remember how quickly this terrible virus can spread, but there are many ways you can support local businesses in a safe way this Christmas.
