Lench thanked for playing ‘vital role’ at Rebels after re-joining Wealdstone

-

Slough Town boss Neil Baker admits the timing of Matt Lench’s departure to Wealdstone this week is far from ideal, but he’s backing the midfielder to make a positive impression at a higher level and thanked him for his efforts over the past few seasons.

Lench, who initially joined the Rebels in June 2017, played a vital role in helping the club to promotion a few seasons ago and establishing them as a force to be reckoned with in the National League South.

He left to join Wealdstone in the summer of 2018, but rejoined Slough for a second spell in January 2019 and featured regularly in the Rebels’ midfield, helping them reach the National League South play-offs last season.

He has now moved back to his old club following a sevenday approach from the National League Premier outfit.

“It is with regret that following a seven-day approach from Wealdstone, Matthew Lench has decided to take the opportunity to step up a level and re-join the club he had previously left,” Baker wrote on the club’s website.

“‘Lenchy’ has been upfront throughout his time with us about his desire to play in the National League Premier, and for that reason he goes with our blessing.

“He goes off the back of an excellent season last year, and we hope that he can make a positive impact at the higher level.

“Obviously it is not ideal timing with a number of games in quick succession over the Christmas period – however with Max Worsfold, Ben

Harris, Cam McGilp and Mark Nisbet all coming back to fitness and hopefully available for this period, we will be well covered in terms of personnel.

“We wish Lenchy well and will welcome him and his parents back fondly to Arbour Park when we are able to do so.”

Joint manager Jon Underwood added on Twitter: “Wishing Lenchy all the very best as he takes his opportunity at a higher level. A lovely lad who has played a vital role in our success in recent seasons.”

Lench initially joined Slough from Southern League Premier Division side Hitchin Town in June 2017. He started the 201718 season in fine form and made a name for himself by scoring back-to-back hat-tricks against Kidlington in the FA Trophy and Gainsborough in the first round of the FA Cup.

Lench said on Twitter: “Loved my second spell at Slough Town. A unique club. I’m so grateful to all, especially Bakes and Unders for their suppor t.

“Wealdstone is an opportunity to recognise my goal of moving from step 6 to step 1 and I’m looking forward to the challenge. Thank you and good luck Rebels!”
