Change will help council become carbon neutral
I am quite sure that your letter page will carry many comments from readers about the change to the collection of Black waste bins starting in October. Let me try to put this in context. Firstly, and most importantly this is not being done to save money. Yes, there is a small benefit because if it does what we want, we will, as a Borough, recycle more and we do sell this material. Firstly, and most importantly we will continue to collect Blue and Food waste bins weekly and will be one of a small group of Councils nationally that does this. Also, for several roads and blocks of flats we are maintaining weekly Waste bin collections.
At the same time, we have replanned all routes so that we can move back to 5 days instead of 6-day collections which have been a big problem especially in Windsor. I repeat none of these changes save money, but they will help us achieve our objective of becoming carbon neutral.
None of this will be worth the effort if people continue not use the Food waste bins and fill their Black bins with recyclable products. In addition to sending each property an information pack with all that they need to know about their collections we will be commencing a programme of information to help people on what they can recycle and most importantly get everyone to recycle their food waste. Every bit of food waste is used firstly to produce gas which is burnt to make electricity and the remaining material is sold to farmers as a top dressing.
