Alfonso Tenconi and Danny Horscroft are shortlisted for football awards

-

Just before Christmas, I had an idea I wanted to try and do something to celebrate local football after three, long, hard years for all our volunteers, players and supporters, writes Tom Canning (Football in Berkshire).

Prior to the pandemic, we held an annual awards ceremony at Binfield Football Club and we got about 30 to 40 people along, many of those I am sure because of the opportunity to listen to the dulcet tones of our Sky Sports host, Tom White.

This year’s awards then seemed like a brilliant opportunity to try and pull together as many of the great local football community that we have in the county as we could in one place.

So, we went and booked the taproom at Double-Barrelled Brewery in Reading in the hope that 150 people could be persuaded to come along.

It’s been an incredible couple of months seeing the nominations come in, over 400 in all. I think it’s safe to say that grassroots football in this county is in rude health.

Windsor FC and Slough Town are two of the sides represented in the shortlist which was released this week.

Danny Horscroft is competing for the ‘Goal of the Season’ award, Windsor fan Ian Dawson is up for the ‘Supporter of the Season’ award, and Alfonso Tenconi is shortlisted for ‘Young Player of the Season (Male)’.

Sam Barratt, Nicole Barrett, and Alicia Povey of Maidenhead United are also nominated for ‘Goal of the Season’ and ‘Female Player of the Season’ respectively.

Tickets for the awards night – hosted again by Tom White – on Wednesday, June 15 are selling fast so if you want to ensure a seat then you’ll need to book early.

Following the event, there will be a rundown and pictures in the Express.
