Final farewell to tragic Kiera

Family and friends pay tribute ahead of teen’s funeral

- Gary Fanning

Hundreds of mourners will attend the funeral of Kiera Beagle tomorrow (Thursday).

Family, friends , school pupils, teachers and members of the community will say a final fairwell to the popular teenager whose death has been described as ‘unexplained;’.

The service is at 11am in Calderhead Erskine Church .

The 13-year-old died in hospital after collapsing in the gym during a PE class at Calderhead High on Thursday, May 26.

Exactly a week after Kiera’s death, the community united to pay their respects to the popular school girl by releasing purple ballons in to the air in the ground’s of Calderhead High last Thursday.

Among Kiera’s family were her shattered mum, Lauren Beagle and her grandmum Elaine Black.

Her devastated friends were in tears as they released balloons in to the air in memory of their friend.

Many of the people there were dressed in purple or in bright colours to celebrate Kiera’s young life.

They listened to music playing as they gathered for more than an hour before a speech was made by head teacher John Robertson.

Shotts councillor Tommy Cochrane, who attended the vigil, said the whole community pulled together to pay their respect to Kiera. “It was very touching,” he added. “I felt for the family. “It was a difficult time for them but they would have taken some comfort from the community pulling together. “It makes me proud of Shotts to see the community uniting together at times like this.

“I am heartfelt sorry what happened to the young girl .

Councillor Cochrane was standing beside Councillor Charlie Cefferty and noticed a change in the normal direction of the wind that allowed hundreds of purple balloons to float over the town’s Baptist Church.

Councillor Cefferty said: “It was a fitting tribute to Kiera who was a well-liked and popular girl.

“I would like to pay tribute to the staff, pupils, the community of Shotts and surrounding villages who stood together in memory of this special person who was Kiera.

“A very kind and emotional act of love and remembrance shared in support of her family and friends.

“As the balloons soared into the sky, to me it was very poignant that they floated over the church next to the school.

“My heartfelt sympathies go to her family who have indeed given us an angel”.

A memorial page for Kiera’s family has raised more than £5000.
