Schoolboy, 10, miracle escape

Parents fear another child could be killed on road

- Michael Temlett

Anxious parents of a 10-yearold boy this week told how he evaded death after being mown down by a car while playing in a Wishaw street.

Matthew McAlonan suffered two fractured arms and severe bruising to his pelvis in an horrific accident outside his home in Hopefield Gardens.

Now his parents Paul and Tracy fear a child will get knocked down and killed before the council take urgent action to put the brakes on speeding motorists.

They said Matthew had a “miracle escape” after he was crossing the road with his friend when he was hit by the vehicle. Mum-of-three Tracy said the accident could have had far more serious consequences and said there is a fatality waiting to happen on the road.

She told the Wishaw Press: “It could have been a lot worse for Matthew. But it’s only a matter of time until someone gets killed. You see it all the time with drivers coming into the estate.

“They fly up and down the road and the speed bumps which are there don’t slow you down one bit.

“There are no speed signs either when you come into Hopefield Gardens and people just come straight off the roundabout and speed down the road.”

Matthew, who has two older brothers Robert, 12, and Stephen, 19, has been housebound since the incident and Paul has been worried sick.

Paul added: “We’ve asked the council to look into it as something has to be done before there is a death.

“You don’t need to slow down to go over the bumps. They serve no purpose.

“Kids don’t have anywhere to play and you would like to think if they are in the front garden and want to cross the road with their friends they can do so safely.

“But when cars appear out of nowhere because of the speed they are doing it makes you worry.”
