Pupils have an ace time at tennis camp

Competition is a smash hit

- Michael Temlett

Forty youngsters from local primary schools had a smashing time at an inter-schools tennis competition.

Pupils from Morningside Primary in Wi s haw, Dykehead Primary and St Mary’s in Shotts and Cathedral Primary in Motherwell made a racquet at Wishaw Sports Centre.

Grant Shearer, Tennis development officer with North Lanarkshire Leisure, put the youngsters through their paces. He said: “It was great to see so many pupils having such a good time.

“It’s all about getting them to have fun and developing their basic techniques and encourage them to build on their talent.

“This will hopefully increase the amount of people participating in the sport and keep the kids active from an early age.

“The programme links well with our existing schools tennis programme and our tennis academies at Ravenscraig, Wishaw and Broadwood. Tennis is a great sport to keep fit, have fun, challenge friends and learn new skills.”

The NLL tennis academy is available for adults and children of all abilities and is delivered by a fully qualified Lawn Tennis Association coach.

Tennis camps will be running at Ravenscraig and Broadwood throughout the school holidays.
