Time running out to make up minds

Remain support dips as poll draws nearer

- Lynn McKenna

Thousands of voters will head to the polls tomorrow to cast their votes on whether or not we should leave or remain in Europe.

With less than 24 hours to go until all votes are cast , both groups of the EU Referendum are stepping up their campaigns in a bid to win as many votes as possible.

Support for remaining in the EU appeared to have dipped in Scotland as the referendum draws nearer.

An Ipsos Mori poll for STV last week suggested backing for the remain camp, while still well ahead, had fallen by 13 per cent over the last two months.

The poll of 1,000 adults - carried out between June 6 and 12 - showed a majority (53 per cent) still support remaining in the EU, with 32 per cent backing Brexit.

When the same question was asked in April, 66 percent were in favour of the UK’s continued membership while 29 per cent wanted to leave.

Of those who say they are likely to vote tomorrow , more than half want to stay in the EU while 33 per cent support Brexit and 8 per cent are undecided.

We took to the streets of Wishaw to ask traders their views on the upcoming election.

Carol Tierney, of Tierney Trims on Kirk Road said: “I want out. I’m sick and tired of people dictating what we do. “It’s time to go.” “I’m not worried about my business either way but as a resident in Britain I have a very strong opinion.

“I know the way I want tomorrow’s vote to go.

“I think if we leave the EU then we have a better chance of dealing with the disastrous immigration issue we currently have. It’s time to look after our own.”

Steven McGhee, of Keelo Jewellers said he is happy with how things are in Britain at the moment.

He added: “Things are going well for us and I don’t want anything to change. I wouldn’t want to unsettle things.

“I don’t look into anything too deep and just take everyday as it comes. Whatever happens happens.”

Uppermost Shoe Repairs owner Paul Riley said he was still undecided.

“We have been bombarded with so much information I don’t know what to think.

“If we had to leave the EU I don’t think local businesses would be affected. I think it would be chain stores who would take the hit.

“At the moment I am pretty happy with how things are but only time will tell what is going to happen.“

I want out. I’m sick and tired of people dictating what we do. It’s time to go . . .
