St Aidan’s High pupils’ opinions

-

Last year MPs voted 303 to 253 to reject an amendment to the European Union Referendum Bill that would lower the voting age from 18 to 16 for the EU referendum. As the decision to remain or leave Europe will have a dramatic impact on the youth of today, the Wishaw Press caught up with St Aidan’s High pupils to ask their views on the pending election. Sarah Quinn said she would like to remain in Europe. She added: “Working rights are protected if we stay, especially mine as a female. “It keeps educational opportunities and also travel opportunities. We don’t know the possible result if we choose to leave.” Amanda Nailon is unsure of change. She said: “I’d prefer to remain part of Europe as it is not clear what could possibly happen in the future. “It might mean if we leave we could lose many job opportunities. There is a high risk to the economy if we leave.” Victoria Drain agreed. She added: “We cannot predict the impact that leaving would have on our country, particularly the economy. I believe it is too much of a risk to the financial state of the country due to the decrease in trade.” Pupil Dashiell Mkelemi has been researching the pros and cons s. He added: “I have been reading different articles about how the Referendum would affect different parts of our society and I also managed to watch parts of the debate last night. I believe that our future will be more secure if we remain.” Jake Campbell told the Wishaw Press whatever happens in tomorrow’s election, things are bound to change. No matter what the decision is made it will affect all aspects of our lives.”
