Newarthill and Carfin Parish Church Sunday, June 19 saw the annual prize giving to the children of the Sunday school. Fourteen children were in attendance to receive recognitio­n for their attendance at the event, but the other children who could not attend on the day will receive their books in due course. Before the presentati­ons the children sang songs and gave the congregati­on an overview of their activities during the year with artwork displayed in the sanctuary. Data Protection Act 1998 Those who were not present in church on Sunday, June 12, will be required to collect a consent form to provide consent in order for the Kirk Session to hold their personal informatio­n for the purpose of roll administra­tion and associated church related matters, including the provision of pastoral care. Forms are available at the back of the church. Anyone requiring further informatio­n should speak to Ann Pickering, the Session Clerk. Appeal Thanks to all who supported the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides recent appeal for shoes, boots and socks, with almost 100 pairs of footwear and socks donated. These have all now been dropped off at the central point in Edinburgh for onward delivery to refugees in Syria, Greece and Lebanon through the “Edinburgh Cares” project. Spring fayre quiz The winner of the recent spring fayre quiz was Elizabeth Irvine. Coffee mornings The weekly coffee mornings are held each Thursday morning in Newarthill and Carfin church hall from 10am to 12 noon, all welcome. The coffee morning on Thursday of this week will donate their proceeds to St Andrew’s Hospice’s “Pearl Tea Party” appeal. Everyone is welcome to come along to this event and donations of home baking and raffle prizes will also be welcomed. The coffee mornings held at Carfin church are on the summer break and resume on Tuesday, July 5. Christian Aid week Thanks to everyone who helped during the recent Christian Aid week, with the coffee morning raising £223.70; envelopes raising £146 and sponsored walk raising £432 making a total of £801.70. Well done everyone who took part in these events. The concert given by Octave in Dalziel St Andrew’s Church raised a further £1031. Community council Newarthill community council has organised an outing to Ayr on Saturday, July 2, with buses leaving from Brannock High School car park at 9am, and leaving Ayr at 6pm that evening. Tickets for the trip are on sale from the Co-op, Nisa store and the Bowling Club and are £5 for adults and £3 for children. June 25 is the closing date.

Primrose Orchestral Flutes concert Carluke Primrose Orchestral Flutes will be performing their 36th annual concert in the Lifestyles Centre on Friday evening of this week at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £7, are still available to purchase. Conductor John Bryce has announced that he will be retiring from conducting and to mark the occasion he has chosen a programme to suit all tastes. The first selection of music includes several famous classical dances such as Thunder and Lightning polka by Strauss, Waltz number two from Shotakovic­h’s the Jazz Suite and Philip Sparke’s Klezmer Karnival. For popular music fans the orchestra will play a piece called The Prayer, written by Sager and Foster. Also included in the evening will be a performanc­e from the orchestra’s youth group.
