A devastated friend of an 82-year-old woman conned out of her life savings by her cruel carer told how the stress of the trial killed her.

A devastated friend of an 82-year-old woman conned out of her life savings by her cruel carer told how the stress of the trial killed her.

Isa Melrose died weeks before twisted Alison Boyle was brought to justice for embezzling nearly £12,000 and stealing jewellery from the OAP.

And the pensioner’s friend hit out at the justice system after Boyle dodged jail.

The friend, who didn’t want to be named, told the Wishaw Press: “The stress of the trial killed her.

“She went to court on the Thursday for a dress rehearsal and she passed away on the Saturday. “It was a traumatic experience for Isa.” Boyle appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week for sentencing after been found guilty at her trial in May.

Between September 2014 and March last year, Boyle, of Gair Crescent, Wishaw, embezzled £ 11,705 from 82-year-old Mrs Melrose and stole a quantity of jewellery. Boyle embezzelled Mrs Melrose’s cash at post offices in the Main Street and Rannoch Drive. The charges also relate to her home in Raven Wynd, Wishaw.

However, despite these crimes Sheriff Thomas Millar decided against sending the 55-year-old to prison.

Instead she was given a six-month restriction of liberty order meaning she must remain in her home between the hours of 7pm and 5am.

Boyle was also ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work that must be completed within 12 months.

And the friend described the lenient sentence as “shocking” and “disgusting”.

The man added: “This is not justice for my friend and judging by Boyle’s behaviour in court it seems that she could not care less what she did.

“She appeared to be very gallus about the whole thing.

“Isa was a real lady and enjoyed a long and happy marriage to her late husband Jack, who was a police officer.

“She was well-known within Wishaw and enjoyed going out and about.

“However, when this happened it just destroyed her.”
