Language, games and food all part of school’s Day of Culture

Netherton Primary School enjoyed a‘Day of Culture’or‘Journée de la Culture’the day before the EU referendum focusing on French and Spanish with a little British Sign Language as well.

Each class created a culture board about a French or Spanish speaking country.

Pupils baked lemon biscuits and madeleines for the occasion and families were invited to come and share the French fayre and languages at the school’s Culture Café where the‘Café Kids’encouraged the visitors to order in French.

Clare Carroll, a developmen­t officer for SCILT (Scotland’s National Centre for the Developmen­t of Languages) came to support the pupils, staff and wider school community, helping them all to understand the importance of modern languages in education.

The children played pétanque and were involved in lots of other cultural activities.

Children worked with members from parent groups icing cakes with Spanish and French flags and visitors were encouraged to learn Spanish, French and BSL in ‘drop-in-and-learn’clinics,

Anita Baskervill­e, head teacher, said: “The day was a huge success and merci beaucoup to all the parents and family members who supported our‘Journée de la Culture’.

“Our huge thanks also go to the excellent young people from Clyde Valley High School who supported our pupils on the day.”
