Adam’s fight night goes down the drain

Ankle injury rules out MacKenzie

- Michael Temlett

Motherwell boxer Adam MacKenzie suffered yet another setback in his boxing career.

The 23-year-old was due to return to the ring on Saturday night but suffered ligament damage after his foot was caught in a drain.

The accident happened last Wednesday – one night after MacKenzie’s intensive training camp had finished.

The Motherwell man had been looking to bounce back following a disappointing defeat to Brent Fidoe in his third professional fight.

But the unfortunate incident has left the luckless boxer waiting to make a recovery.

He said: “I was leaving work on Wednesday night and I didn’t see the hole with the drain and my ankle just went right through. “I just can’t seem to get any luck. “The minute I did it I could tell it was going to be a bad one and I’m just waiting for the pain to ease off now.

“The worst thing about it is that I’ve got to sit and relax and I’m used to being active the whole time so it’s difficult.

“I’m stuck in the house and there’s only so much daytime television you can watch!

“I’m going back to the doctor today (Wednesday) to get an update because when I was there last week it was hard to get a full extent of the injury but it’s my ligaments that have been damaged.

“I feared at first it could be broken but thankfully it wasn’t as I would have been out longer.”

MacKenzie revealed how long he is expected to be out and when he hopes to return to the ring providing his recovery goes well.

The personal trainer is hopeful of fitting in two more fights before the end of the year but admits the injury could not have came at a worse time.

The 23-year-old has only had three bouts in three years as a pro and wants to build some momentum in the next year.

He said: “The doctors think it will be a couple of months for it to recover so I’ve just got to rest and hope for the best.

“I spoke to Sam (Kynoch, MGM Promotions) and we’re both hoping I can be out again in October time before hopefully getting a bigger fight in December.

“It was tough to take because I had put so much work into this training camp and it was longer than any other one I’ve done because the result of my last fight.

“So to work so hard and end up not being able to fight was extremely disappointing.

“It was a sore one to take but I just need to wait until I get better before I get ready to go again.”
