Cancer patient Susan fights shock diagnosis
Nurses help her battle
Mum- of- one Susan Gray says she refused to let her shock cancer diagnosis get her down when doctors broke the devastating news when she was just 38.
Brave Susan, mum to Jude, 8, was diagnosed with Triple X Negative Breast Cancer in January after being convinced the lump she found on her left breast was benign.
She said : “When I got told the news I didn’t cry. I think I was in that much shock.
“It wasn’t until they gave me the book ‘my mummy has a lump’ that it hit me that I was going to have to go home and tell my husband and my boy that I had cancer.
“My son being only eight took it so well.”
Since her diagnosis Susan has endured several bouts of intense chemotherapy and underwent a mastectomy at Wishaw General Hospital where she has praised the staff for their professionalism and care.
She added: “We had some good laughs. Rather than the chemo room being dreary and depressing the nurses made it fun. Their enthusiasm and empathy really got myself and my family through.”
Susan was given the news last week that she is now cancer-free. She will, however, still undergo her remaining 15 sessions of radio therapy just to be on the safe side.
Susan added: “I really hope they lower the mammogram age because this can happen to anyone at any age.
“My diagnosis has shown me the strength I have. Don’t sweat the small stuff be positive.
“The support I had from friends and family was unbelievable and totally overwhelming and I’ll never forget everything they did for me.”
Susan’s mum Jane said : “Susan is an inspiration. The way she handled her diagnosis and her treatment was amazing . The nurses at Wishaw were fab. They were like a big hug.”
