Make a lot of racquet like Andy

-

Have you been inspired by Andy Murray’s Wimbledon and Olympic success this summer or British Women’s Number One Johanna Konta’s rise up the rankings?

The next generation of Scottish tennis stars can be coached in Wishaw with sessions every Saturday afternoon.

The Tennis For Free sessions, run by North Lanarkshire Leisure, takes place every Saturday from 1pm to 3pm at Wishaw Sports Centre.

The sessions include a free coach led tennis session from 1pm to 2pm followed by an open play session from 2pm to 3pm.

Top coaches will be on hand to give out advice and tips to improve your forehand or backhand.

The open play session is run by members of the community with equipment supplied.

Anyone interested in the tennis sessions can register at the NL Leisure website.

NL Leisure racquet sport development officer Grant Shearer said:“The free sessions now have more than 40 players per week every Saturday. For a lot of people it’s the first chance for them to play tennis.

“The free programme runs until October but we also run tennis events 40 weeks per year.

“It is growing all the time and we now have more than 250 people taking part. Having events such as the Davis Cup in Glasgow is really helping us.”

A mini tennis programme also runs at Wishaw Sports Centre on a Tuesday night from 5pm to 8pm.

Classes run in eight week blocks and cost £40 per block. To book
