Righting the wrongs by building for the future

years the SNP government have cut £1.4 billion from local councils like North Lanarkshir­e.

That means huge cuts to the budgets for our schools, services and social housing.

But we don’t have to accept these cuts. The Scottish Parliament has new powers over tax and borrowing which would let us invest instead.

Faced with the choice between hundreds of millions of pounds of cuts that will affect schools and housing in communitie­s like Wishaw, Motherwell, Bellshill and Holytown or using these new powers the SNP must use the powers. Labour will continue to make the case at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, whilst Labour councils like North Lanarkshir­e Council will continue to deliver for working class families.

Before the Motherwell St Johnstone game at Fir Park recently Labour campaigner­s were talking to fans from both sides about our plans to repeal the SNP Football Act.

The controvers­ial law has broken down trust between police and football fans without doing anything to tackle intoleranc­e.

The way to beat bigotry is through education in classrooms and communitie­s because sectariani­sm in Scotland is too old and complex to be solved in 90 minutes on a Saturday.
