Celtic legends pack out venue for Beatson charity

Sportsman‘s event by Harry Hood raises around £18,000

Over 250 football fans enjoyed a night with Celtic legends at Dalziel Park Hotel, near Carfin, Motherwell, to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Supporters packed out the venue for dinner and entertainment with fan favourites Lubo Moravcik and Chris Sutton.

The event is part of a series of fundraisers being held as Harry Hood, of Uddingston, owner of the Lisini Pub Company and himself a Celtic legend, who aims to raise £50,000 for the charity.

The pledge comes after Harry, who pulled on the Hoops from 1969 to 76, was given the all-clear after his own battle with cancer.

His Lisini company is family-owned and run, and has four venues across Lanarkshire and Glasgow.

To date, a range of fundraising events and community days have raised over £22,000, with more to be added from the Lubo and Sutton sportsman’s dinner which is expected to have raised around £18,000.

As well as a number of games and contests – during which the winners put their cash prizes straight into the Beatson pot – money was raised through ticket sales and an auction.

Fans were treated to a three-course meal and entertainment, with the highlight almost certainly being a question and answer session with the former star players.

While Sutton reflected on his glittering career – which also included stints with Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea – Lubo recounted playing football on the streets of his home town in Slovakia, honing his techniques from morning till night.

Dawn Ferguson, corporate and events fundraiser for the Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We are sincerely grateful to everyone at Lisini Pub Company for organising and hosting a truly remarkable sportsman’s dinner which raised an incredible amount on top of the already amazing fundraising total.

“The team behind Lisini Pub Company are so passionate about supporting the charity and we are truly inspired by their dedicated efforts.

“The event was a huge success and everyone in attendance had a brilliant time thanks to the hard-working staff who made sure everyone had a fantastic night.

“We really can’t thank Lisini Pub Company enough for their continued support and look forward to the calendar of events they have planned in support of the charity for the coming months.”

Beatson Cancer Charity is committed to securing significant funding to support and enhance the treatment, care and wellbeing of current, former and future cancer patients and their families.
