Sean’s late show seals place in the last eight

- Michael Temlett

Wishaw Juniors needed a last minute goal to book their place in the League Cup quarterfinals for the third year in a row.

Sean McKenna’s stoppage- time strike sent the Beltane Park side through on goal difference after Ross McGeachie netted a double and Mark Daly scored for the visitors.

Now Wishaw travel to Lesmahagow tonight in the last eight and manager Chris McGroarty believes it’s the best preparation ahead of the league season.

He said: “It definitely gives us a boost and puts us in a positive frame of mind.

“You get to this point and you start to look forward to the quarter final and have one eye on the semi- final and thereon.

“We were unlucky to go out in the semi-final last year to Vale of Clyde on penalties but it set us up well for the season because we went on to have a good year.

“However, Vale of Clyde then went on to the final but were fighting relegation for the season, so we won’t look too much into it.

“We’re just happy to get into the next round and I thought the boys were excellent on Saturday.

“When we knew we needed one more goal we pushed hard for it and thankfully we got our reward.”

Shotts boss Kieran McGuinness was gutted with his side’s performance but admits his side must forget about the League Cup ahead of the new campaign.

The Bonny host Girvan in the season opener this Saturday at Hannah Park and McGuinness can’t wait.

He said: “We wanted to bounce back after the disappointment against Gartcairn but unfortunately we never performed in the first half and the game was out of sight.

“We improved in the second half but credit to Wishaw as they played extremely well.

“We’ve had a few players missing through injury and we won’t have everyone back for the game against Girvan but we’ll be as close as we can to full strength.

“We’re still a work in progress because we’ve got new players and a new coaching staff so it will take time to settle but we’re getting there.

“Of course you want to do well in the cup but the league is our priority and the boys well be well up for it this Saturday.”
