Sam has an important message for MSP

- Michael Temlett

ACE member Sam Francis has told how hard it is for people with learning difficulties to get their voices heard.

Sam, from Newarthill, was just one member of the Lanarkshire- based group who met with the Central Scotland Labour list MSP Richard Leonard.

Mr Leonard has vowed to work with people who have learning disabilities in a bid to create equality for them.

Sam, who has learning difficulties, said: “What we think is not always heard or listened to.

“But people who have learning disabilities have a lot to say about important issues.

“It is important our MSPs who represent us talk to us and listen to what we have to say. Mr Leonard has promised to do this.

“We talked about the impact these things have on aspects of life such as meeting new friends and being able to do things other people take for granted.

“We were really interested to hear from Mr Leonard, and were pleased to hear he would be taking action on the issues we raised.”

Mr Leonard was impressed with the ACE Group and said it was important for him to listen to their concerns.

I learned a lot about particular issues I can help influence, especially employment,” he added.

“It is shocking that less than eight per cent of adults who have learning disabilities are able to find work.

“I really value the group having a collective voice on issues that are important to them.

“People who have learning disabilities have the right to demand equality and I’m happy to help and support the group as their MSP.”

ACE (Active Community of Empowered) are challenging barriers that people with learning difficulties face in their lives.

Mr Leondard discussed their main concerns about employment, hate crime, social isolation and welfare.

Eighty per cent of people who have learning disabilities recently engaged in # ENABLEt h e Vo t e through social media which highlighted the areas as concerns to them.

This compares to the 30 per cent of people who have learning disabilities who usually vote in an election.
