Trio in UK Games

- Ross Thomson

A trio of Carluke High School pupils got the chance of a lifetime when they represented their country at The UK School Games recently.

S5 pupil Andrew Berry and S4 pupils David Hird and Cameron Watson took part in the Games held at the start of this month at Loughborough University.

The event was made up of 12 sports, including seven disability events, with the Carluke students participating in wheelchair table tennis and wheelchair basketball.

They competed in a field of 1600 athletes from across the country.

Andrew finished in fourth place in the wheelchair table tennis event.

He said: “The experience was fantastic. Hopefully I am going to do it again next year and keep playing throughout the year towards it.”

For David Hird it was his first time at The UK School Games and he was overjoyed with the experience.

He and his team also found success finishing fifth in the wheelchair basketball event.

He said: “The best part of the opening ceremony was meeting some of the Paralympians and talking to them about sports as a Paralympian.”

The UK School Games reenforces the experience of the Olympic and Paralympic Games- complete with opening and closing ceremonies.

David spoke of his sporting dreams for when he leaves school.

He added: “I want a career in Paralympics: I want to be a player, or maybe a professional Paralympic coach.”
