Motherwell Photographic Society At the meeting of the society on Thursday of last week, members viewed the 2016 Royal Photographic Society’s wildlife portfolio. It was also the hand-in night for the first projected image competition with a good number of entries submitted. The first speaker of the session was Amy Gibbons, who gave an interesting and insightful talk on living with ME. Amy explained how it is difficult to diagnose the disease and talked of her years struggling to live with the restrictions it has put on her life. Rotary Club Eighteen members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw visited the Glasgow Gurdwara on Tuesday evening of last week. The Gurdwara serves the Sikh and wider community in Glasgow by promoting free educational services, a free kitchen, faith and cultural services and political engagement activities. The new building was opened in April 2013, at a cost of £3.8 million, all of which was raised by the community. At the end of the tour the Rotarians enjoyed a freshly cooked Sikh meal including a superb mix of vegetarian dishes. The guest speaker at the meeting was Liz Macintyre Allan, who spoke about her book, Love Letters from a Desert Rat, published in 2008. She recalled tales of when she was growing up and how her mother, Nan, had told her family stories so vividly and was able to hold the attention of her audience. Later, her own grandchildren were also captivated by her stories of her life in Glasgow, - the Empire exhibition, the war years, tenement life and Alex, their grandfather. Liz was a principal teacher of English at Uddingston Grammar and it seemed natural for her to use stories from her life and background in her classroom. She found, to her great pleasure, that her classes of children from the ages of 11 to 16 loved stories to hear of these times. Following the death of her mother in 1998, the idea grew in her mind to make the life story of Alex and Nan her ‘project’ and she wanted to write their story for her own family. Since so much of their life was spent in the tenements of Glasgow which no longer exist, she wanted to capture this world, as best she could. John McGeary provided a hearty vote of thanks and the winner of the weekly bonus ball was Andrew Murray.
