Fractured foot floors Flynn fight

- Michael Temlett

Gutted Charlie Flynn will miss out on a title shot after suffering training camp injuries.

The Newarthill boxer was scheduled to fight for the WBA Intercontinental title against Kofi Yates on the Ricky Burns undercard at the Hydro.

However, the 22-yearold took to social media over the weekend to announce fractured ribs.

Now the Commonwealth Games gold medallist will have to wait to get his hands on the title after his injury setback.

The Mailman said: “Bad news folks, I’ve cracked/ fractured my ribs in sparring in the build- up to this fight and have been unable to train or spar, going for an X-ray now.

“I’ll need to give this show a miss and hopefully be back before the end of the year.

“Appreciate all the support, I’ll refund all money back to people who no longer want to go. I’m sorry about that folks but there’s not much I can do. I’m absolutely gutted but that’s boxing.”

Flynn had been looking to make it nine professional wins since making the switch from amateur boxing after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. However, Flynn’s pain went from bad to worse as later he revealed he had also fractured his foot and posted an image on Twitter branded #cannywin.

The Wishaw Press exclusively revealed last month that the Mailman had recovered from a hand injury which forced the lightweight out of action after an operation.

Speaking at the time, Flynn said: “I had a wee set-back with my hand in the run- up to the fight and I wasn’t able to punch properly.

“I still managed to get the win but now the pain has gone and I’ve had the chance to relax a little bit.”

Flynn hopes to be back in action by the end of 2016.
