Newmains pay the penalty

-

Port Glasgow ........ 4 Newmains United . 2 Ten-man Newmains United fell to Port Glasgow on Saturday after conceding two penalties.

United boss Kevin Muirhead was pleased with the reaction from his side after a defeat to Royal Albert last week but was still gutted to leave Parklea Stadium empty-handed.

He said:“It was always going to be a tough ask but when you’re 1-0 up you fancy it. We played well in the first half and it was exactly the reaction I was looking for after last week.

“We were working as a team which we didn’t do last week but the sending off changed the game.”

Newmains started well and David O’Donnell caused problems in the Port defence with his mazy runs, and was brought down in the box after 15 minutes for a penalty – which Kieran O’Hear fired into the top right corner.

Ross Lundie picked up a yellow card not long after the restart, then committed a clumsy challenge giving the referee no alternative than to send him off.

After 54 minutes Port were awarded a penalty, which McAfee slotted away to make the score 1-1.

Three minutes later the referee decided to award another penalty to Port, with McAfee getting his second.

The roof fell in on the Newmains defence as Port added further goals in the 63rd and 85th minutes.

Newmains pulled one back from the spot, as O’Hear made it 4-2.
