X Factor smile’s thanks to Trust

Achieve let James follow his dreams

- Lynn Love

Former X Factor hopeful James Hughes returned to his former Wishaw school.

James, 17, took time out of his busy schedule to talk to pupils about his time on the show and his experience of taking part in the Prince’s Trust programme when he was at St Aidan’s High.

James took part in the Prince’s Trust education programme two years ago.

The Achieve programme helps young people who are struggling at school to overcome challenges, gain new skills and the self-belief to reach their goals.

Young people can also gain an accredited qualification.

Speaking to pupils, James said: “I was having a difficult time at school, my confidence was low and I wasn’t paying attention in class.

“I joined the Prince’s Trust course not sure what to expect, but it has been one of the best things I have ever done.

“It gave me the confidence to be myself, meet new friends and gain qualifications.

James’ X Factor experience was cut short after judge Nicole Scherzinger axed him from the live show line-up.

Viewers across the country watched as the 17-year-old performed for the former Pussycat Doll and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris at her luxury villa in the French Riviera

Nicole gave James hope that he could still make it another year, telling him: “I don’t think it’s time for you yet. But that doesn’t mean you’re not going to get there.”

The former St Aidan’s High pupil hoped his impressive voice and bubbly personality would earn him a place on the live shows after wowing the judges with his first audition and bootcamp performances.

He said: “I would recommend the Achieve programme to everyone at school. Hav ing the Prince’s Trust on your CV means something to employers.

“Without the course, I won’t have had the confidence to apply for the XFactor. I can’t recommend it enough.”

Young people can choose the Achieve programme when picking their school subjects.
