The upgrading of Wishaw’s Belhaven Park looks set to continue with funding secured for a new wildflower meadow in the park.

Greenspace Development c o n f i rmed they had managed to get funding for an number of meadows throughout North Lanarkshire.

And in a letter to Coltness Community Council members North Lanarkshire Council’s land improvement officer Kevin MacWard confirmed a proposal to have one such meadow in Belhaven Park.

Greenspace Development ’ s Kirsty Mooney said: “Wildflower meadows have decreased by 97 per cent in the UK since the 1940s and their loss contributes to the current decline of pollinators, such as bees, we are now facing.

“These meadows will be created entirely with the help and involvement of the local community including schools and other community groups.

“This will be done through the planting of plugs and the sowing of native seed as well as improving the ecological management of existing meadows.

“These will also act to contribute to a wildlife corridor across North Lanarkshire.”

Over the past few years there has been a number of improvements to the park including the introduction of a £84,000 skate park which opened last year.

The Wishaw war memorial was also moved to the park while a memorial honouring the sacrifice of local servicemen in the Far East during World War Two was also unveiled.

An Armed Forces Garden was also completed.

However, in March the Wishaw Press reported that mindless vandals had targeted the Armed Forces Garden, which is located at the entrance to the park and lists details of various British military conflicts.
