Fatality fears on ‘death trap’ road Speed camera calls for Calderhead-Benhar Roads

- Gary Fanning

Calls have been made for a speed camera at a ‘death trap’ junction in Shotts before there is another fatality.

Councillors Tommy Cochrane and Charlie Cefferty have called for traffic-calming measures in Calderhead Road at its junction with Benhar Road before someone is killed.

Their plea comes after there was another accident on the road which is the Calderhead Road Junction at the B7057 and B717 last week.

SNP councillor Tommy Cochrane said: “Calderhead Road at Benhar Road is a death trap,

“I have had a look at Transport Scotland’s website and read ‘ safety cameras deployed through the programme must be done so primarily where they have the greatest potential to reduce injury collisions, and where there is evidence of both collisions and speeding”.

“In my opinion this junction fits this criteria.”

Councillor Cochrane has urged council bosses to deploy a camera as quickly as possible on the road and a 40mph speed limit on the road. “If this is not done I can see another fatality occurring very soon,” he added.

Independent councillor Charlie Cefferty has raised his concerns with road bosses and told them it was time to install speed reduction measures on this stretch of road.

“If you use this road/junctions on a regular basis, like I do, almost daily, you would witness the danger that inconsiderate drivers create,” he added.

“I accept that individuals speeding are responsible for their own actions but those of us in positions of responsibility can’t ignore the dangers they create.

“I, therefore, request that measures are put in place to deter high speeds.

“This should in my opinion be a speed camera which I believe will have a positive impact.

“Whilst I acknowledge there is a process to allow such a request,

“I want this to commence immediately without delay.

“There is sufficient data recording the accidents at this location I understand.

“Can we have a traffic and speed count undertaken immediately to assist in the provision of a speed camera.”

David Smart, Business Manager Roads Operations, said that they will monitor the road following the councillors’ concerns.

“We’re aware of the concerns of elected members regarding Benhar Road, Shotts,” he added.

“Roads and Transportation is currently investigating the traffic situation at this junction. These investigations will include reviewing accident statistics from Police Scotland and gathering speed data.”

I want this to commence immediately without delay . . . there is sufficient data recording the incidents at this location . . .
