Samson hails Fir Park rookies

Dembele is hauled down by Samson for Celtic’s penalty Motherwell fall to attack from Celts

Craig Samson reckons the Motherwell young team showed they fear no one.

The Fir Park keeper was highly impressed as Mark McGhee chucked in the kids – and they refused to be overawed at Parkhead.

The youngsters went down 2-0 but Samson insists they can hold their heads high.

He said:“The boys were excellent. The kids who came into the team were different class. It is a credit to them that they could come into a match like this and do so well. It’s great.

“They weren’t fazed by it. Sometimes this can be the best place to get thrown in, in a big stadium against the team at the top of the league.

“You go in with no fear because you are not under any pressure. The boys were brilliant and they deserve all the credit they get.

“You are never happy to lose 2-0 but the last time we came here we lost 5-0, although Celtic were brilliant that night.

“This time we had a different gameplan. We worked on something and it nearly paid off.

“But it doesn’t matter who you are playing or where it is, you are never happy to lose.”

Samson was superb in keeping Celts at bay but he held his hands up for giving away the penalty for the second goal.

He said:“I’d rather not have a save to make, to be honest. I’m happy if I never touch the ball and can put my feet up.

“But you are going to have to make saves here. I made a couple but it wasn’t enough for us to stay in the game.

“With the penalty, in hindsight, I probably should have stayed where I was. ” Celtic ............................ 2 Motherwell ................... 0
