CHAMPING AT THE BIT

Moult bemoans another lay-off

- Michael Temlett

Lo u i s M o u l t a d m i t s Motherwell’s stop- start season has been the source of frustration this year.

Well are without a game this weekend as their clash with Aberdeen was postponed due to their involvement in the Betfred Cup semi-finals.

Moult admits the experience of defeat at Celtic Park last weekend after an international break was tough but not having another game right around the corner is frustrating.

And the Steelmen striker wants to get points on the board as soon as possible after a stuttering start which leaves Well in sixth.

After a 2- 0 loss to Celtic, Moult believes improvements are being made on the park following a 5- 0 defeat at Parkhead earlier this season. He said: “It was very disappointing because we always felt we could get something out of the game – especially at 1-0.

“The last time we came here we got beat 5-0 and the end of last season it was seven, so if you look at it like that you’ve got to take a pat on the back.

“I thought they struggled to break us down and it did work.

“Celtic are a different team this season, they’ve got more power and pace but I thought we dealt with it well.

“Naturally, if you’ve been out for a while I think it’ll take four to five games and I was just lucky I got a few goals in the process.

“I’m feeling fitter and fitter as each game goes by so that’s the main thing. The season seems so stop-start – maybe especially for me, because I was injured for a while.

“We’ve had a couple of international breaks and now we’ve got no game on Saturday, so it’s a disappointing one but we’ll have to deal with it and we’ll be ready for next Wednesday against Inverness.

“We need to try and pick up points in the next few games because we’ve got to get points on the board.

“We’ve got two at home with Inverness and Ross County so we need the points, simple as that, to try to stay in the top six.”

Moult had one of the few chances Well had on Saturday and admits that he should have done better with it.

However, the 24-year-old was quick to praise youngsters Jack McMillan, Ross MacLean, David Ferguson and Jake Hastie for their involvement.

And when it came to the old guard, Moult joked that Craig Samson could not be faulted for Celtic’s second goal, after he dragged down Moussa Dembele for a penalty.

He chuckled:“Sammy has held his hands up saying he’s not as quick as Dembele but we all knew that anyway!

“The gaffer has said Sammy had nothing to worry about because he was fantastic all day and we’re not a team to turn around and say,‘That’s your fault’.

“We’re not going to blame each other, we’re a team and we stick together.

“I felt the second goal was a sucker punch because I felt we had a chance but 2-0 is better than 5-0 or seven.

“I’ve had a half chance and if it goes a bit more central I’d back myself but I should do better.

“It’s a difficult place to come to but we said before the game we were the last team to win here so we came here with belief.

“I thought the young boys were fantastic today and fair play to the gaffer for throwing them in. They dealt with the situation well not just with the performance but the occasion.”
