Keep safe this Christmas time

Don’t let your home be crime target

- Sgt Ewan Alexander

November was a particularly busy time of the year for both the community and the police with people enjoying the many bonfires and firework displays in and around the Murdostoun and Wishaw area.

Every year we work closely with North Lanarkshire Council to ensure that any unofficial bonfires that are too close to properties or may be unsafe are removed and encourage people to go to organised events.

I appreciate this can be seen by many as being a ‘killjoy.’ However, it is done with the sole purpose of preventing injury and keeping people safe.

Unfortunately, there are some in the community that either have no concept of their actions or simply do not care.

On November 7, two incidents occurred in Coltness involving fireworks being thrown at people or in built up areas.

One of these incidents occurred whereby a lit firework was thrown at staff members in Tesco Express narrowly missing them.

A 12- year- old boy from the area was identified and charged with this offence. A short time later the same male and another youth aged 16 also from the local area were reported and charged for again throwing a lit firework in Maxton Crescent, Coltness.

Thankfully, no- one was hurt as a result of these incidents.

I am delighted we have identified who is responsible for these crimes as the potential for serious injury cannot be underestimated and the complete disregard for the consequences is appalling.

As we approach Christmas, I would urge you to be extra vigilante with your home security and ensure you are not giving thieves an early Christmas present.

Ensure your house is locked and secure and look after each other ensuring that if someone is going round the doors at Christmas they are not scoping out your house as a target.

Please stay safe this Christmas. Thank you.
