Aqeel is a golden guy in Serbia

-

Aqeel Ahmed surged to victory at the Golden Glove tournament in Serbia last week.

The Commonwealth Games star bolstered his chances of making the 2018 Games with another superb international win.

Ahmed won gold at the Tammer Tournament in Finland earlier this year and silver at the Belgrade Winners Tournament back in April.

Now the 23-year-old is hoping his international form can earn him a Team GB call-up as well. Back in October, Ahmed defeated Kieran McDonald in the final in Finland – the man who is ranked as Britain’s best amateur flyweight.

Ahmed’s latest international success will help his chances of making both teams.

He said:“I don’t feel like I had a fair assessment last time and if I keep showing what I can do by winning gold I must be in line for selection.

“There was a lot on my mind during that fight and I boxed really well to get the gold.

“You’d like to think that would put me in a good place now but I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing and win gold medals.”

Ahmed tweeted following his Serbia success:“Coming home with the gold again from the #goldenglove tournament in Serbia last night at 52kg, happy how with it went.”

The Kier Hardie ABC fighter was one of seven Scots to return from the Golden Glove tournament with gold.

Boxing Scotland were delighted after winning two golds, two silvers and three bronze medals.
