Rovers leapfrog the Ants

-

St Anthony’s ......... 1 Carluke Rovers ..... 4 Carluke came from a goal behind to leapfrog St Anthony’s in the Central District Second table.

Colin Slater’s side travelled to McKenna Park in Govan to notch their fourth league win of the season and move into sixth place.

Things started badly for Rovers as the Ants took the lead through Craig Smith after nine minutes.

Rovers looked to battle back into the game in the first half but couldn’t find a way past the St Anthony’s defence.

The game was almost out of sight when the Ants were awarded a penalty but Kieron Maxwell’s effort smashed off the post and out of play.

It was a huge let-off for Rovers and one they welcomed with open arms.

Ian Watt then hit his first goal of the day and seven minutes later Greg Fernie turned the game on it head by putting the visitors in front.

Lennox was then ordered off for the Ants which opened the game up further for Watt to bag his hat-trick with two goals in the last six minutes.

It was a big win for Rovers who now get set for a local derby against Newmains United this weekend.

Kevin Muirhead’s United side did not have a game last week and sit with one point from their opening eight games.
