Never in doubt for super Andy

-

Andy Murray added another history-making feat to his resume on Sunday by becoming the first person to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the third time.

When it comes to the Dunblane ace smashing records, it should come as no real surprise.

And this year it was never in doubt.

Murray sits on top of the tennis world, having held on to his world number one ranking with victory at the ATP tour finals last month.

Add that to another Wimbledon success this year after his second Olympic gold then it becomes apparent why it was never in doubt.

Murray deserves all the plaudits and the fact he has picked up this award three out of the last four years shows he is our greatest athlete of all time.

This year, Murray had finished ahead of Alistair Brownlee for his triathlon success and the oldest British Olympic gold medallist in history — Nick Skelton.

However, I think the fact the 58-year-old equestrian star finished ahead of Mo Farah is a poor show when you compare achievements.

Farah was the first athlete to complete the historic‘double-double’at the Olympics in 40 years.

The long-distance runner was victorious in both the 5000 and 10,000 metres and you can’t help but wonder why Skelton would pip him to the post for his solitary success.

But at the end of the day, the public vote for who they want to win and that makes Murray’s victory even more impressive.

More than a third of voters chose the Scot despite the fact he had won it two of the previous three years.

The interesting thing is Murray collected his trophy from Miami where he is already in preparation for the Australian Open next month.

Going in to a major as world number one is a new sensation for Murray but one he looks ready, willing and able to deal with.

However, he knows he won’t sit on top of the rankings for long if he doesn’t pull out his best performances in the Grand Slams.

Murray has to make 2017 his by picking up at least two of the majors and I fancy him to lift the Australian Open and Wimbledon for the third time.
