Heartbreak as Christmas tributes stolen from graves

- Ross Thomson

Heartless vandals have stolen touching Christmas tributes left by bereaved families to their loved ones who are laid to rest in Cambusnethan Cemetery.

Two small Christmas trees, left by family members at the graveside, were stolen from the cemetery between Saturday, December 10, and Monday, December 12.

Police are asking members of the public to report any suspicious looking persons who may be in the grounds of the cemetery.

This week, a Police Scotland spokesman said: “Two small Christmas trees which were placed on loved ones’ graves were stolen.

“The trees themselves were of low value, however the two people reporting are very upset that someone has carried out this horrible act.

“Officers are requesting that if anyone saw anyone acting in a suspicious manner to contact the police immediately.”

In June, a spike in vandalism at the cemetery has prompted police to issue a warning to bereaved families to be on their guard for mindless vandals.

The increase prompted angry locals to contact police about the continuing problems.

At that time, Sergeant Alex Pllu, from Wishaw Police Office, said: “We have had several calls regarding vandalism at the cemetery.

“One case in particular involved a woman who called us to say that the grave of her baby had been targeted.

“A teddy bear had been removed and an ornament left at the side of the grave was vandalised.”

In the summer of 2015, more than 3,000 people signed a petition demanding that CCTV be installed in the cemetery following a spate of vandalism.

Around 50 touching tributes to dead family members were wrecked during those incidents.

If anyone has any information regarding these incidents they should contact the police on 101.
