Law Wheelers have fun in sun

Trio complete tough Majorca 312 challenge

- Michael Temlett

Three Law Wheelers recently completed the gruelling Majorca 312 challenge.

Wilma Philips, Bill Davies and Mairi McDonald endured the challenge ahead of a busy 2017 schedule for the cycling club.

The Majorca 312 is one of Spain’s toughest routes and consists of 193 miles – or 312 kilometres – and must be completed within 14 hours. With a start time of 7am, Wilma, Bill and Mairi tackled the tough task head-on and finished the impressive feat.

The 16.568ft of climbing in the baking heat was preparation ahead of 2017.

The club return to Majorca for an annual training week before a hectic schedule.

However, 2016 was a top year for the club with members Sean Quinn and Graham Smith breaking time-trial records, some of which had stood for over 30 years. Jasper Post picked up victory in the annual hill-climb competition with members also taking part in races as far afield as Belgium.

But attention has turned to the upcoming year and with the recent spell of mild weather, the Wheelers have been busy getting the miles in ahead of a busy year.

The early season targets include the annual Majorca training week which includes the lung busting 312km one-day loop of the island.

Closer to home, the club are planning to ride the North Coast 500. This increasingly popular event is a 500-mile loop that follows the northern coast of Scotland.

If you’re looking to burn off the excesses after the festive period, Law Wheelers are welcoming new members.

Club runs leave Newmains Cross at 9am every Sunday and new members are always welcome.
