At new school

£1k damage and telly stolen

- Ross Thomson

Police were this week hunting a teenage boy who ransacked Clyde Valley High School, Overtown, on Sunday night.

The theft, just before midnight, saw a glass panel at a fire escape smashed by the thief in order to gain entry and a television stolen.

North Lanarkshire Council confirmed the school’s shared office for Orchard Primary School and Clyde Valley High School was ransacked with the total damage estimated to be over £1000.

Police want to speak to a youth, aged between 14 and 16 years who was wearing a dark jacket and trousers. Officers believe the teenager may have been disturbed by the school’s alarm and escaped before causing more damage.

A police spokesperson said they were following a positive line of inquiry and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

“A glass panel was smashed before the thief entered a hallway of the school and stole the television that was mounted on a wall,” he added.

“Police are current l y reviewing CCTV in relation to this incident.”

The incident did not stop pupils returning to school as normal on Monday morning following the festive break.

A council spokesman confirmed entry had been gained to the school via a fire escape and that a school janitor had alerted police once the alarm was activated.

Nick Quail, the school’s head teacher, said: “This incident has caused a great deal of upheavel for staff at the start of a new term.”

The new £27 million Clyde Valley Campus opened their doors to secondary school pupils in February last year.

Following the amalgamation of Castlehill and Overtown Primary Schools, pupils of the new Orchard Primary School began their lessons in August.

The new campus was the first all- through school in North Lanarkshire, with accommodation for nursery, primary and secondary pupils.
