Give us something

-

Residents took to our Facebook page to offer their ideas on how to improve the town centre.

Whilst retail units in the town lie empty, many believe there is a need for variety of shops, not more of the same.

Our Facebook page was inundated with comments after Avenue cafe owner Alan McCann blasted the decision to bring a Costa Coffee to Wishaw.

Michele Laing Bryce said:“Costa is overpriced, I love the Avenue Cafe, lovely staff and great prices.

“We need less cafes, hairdressers and bookies and more clothes shops – a wee New Look or something.”

David Butt added: “Spend money in stores owned by local folks. Keep the money circulating in the town.”

Carol McConville posted:“Give us something we haven’t got, we don’t need cafes, hairdressers, bookies or fast food takeaways.”

Christopher Reynolds said:“The town needs more independent shops rather than the commercialised ones of late. Subway, Pizza Hut and now Costa and Dominos – sounds like the council are just selling out.”

However, some residents welcomed the Costa and believe any addition is worthwhile.

Marie Donnachie said: “I would use a Costa. It’s not exactly going to run others out of business. Competition keeps businesses alive.”

Neil Lindsay added:“I would rather have shops to brighten up our decimated Main Street.”

Robert Mann said: “Any new business in Wishaw should be welcomed!”

Finally, Kyle Arrol asked:“What’s the point opening a Costa when there’s one in Tesco?”
