It’s time to forget nightmare 2016 Adam MacKenzie looks for a better 2017

- Michael Temlett

Motherwell boxer Adam MacKenzie wants to put a nightmare 2016 behind him and make this a year to remember.

The 24- year- old suffered two defeats in his two bouts of the year – including a knockout back in February.

However, MacKenzie believes he has his head screwed on straight now and is determined to kick off the year with a bang.

MGM Promotions announced that MacKenzie would clash with unbeaten Castlemilk fighter Ross Murray at next month’s Impetus show in Paisley.

Thirty-five-year-old Murray will take on the Motherwell man but he believes he can show everyone what he is all about on February 18.

MacKenzie said: “Last year was a nightmare for me and although there were a few things going on outside the ring which didn’t help, I don’t have any excuses.

“In my last two fights I was not myself but I feel a lot better now and I’m really looking forward to what should be a good fight.

“I’m starting this year from fresh and I think going up against Ross is a great test for me.

“I’ve seen a couple of his professional fights and I know he came into the sport a bit late but he’s looked good.

“I don’t see too many problems for myself though and I’d like to start off with a win this year and see if we can move on to bigger and better things.

“Although last year wasn’t great, I’m young and I can bounce back from it. If I was Ross’s age it might be a different story.”

The six-round fight at the Lagoon Centre in Paisley is part of MGM Scotland’s latest show.

The promotion, led by Sam Kynoch, have held several shows in the past few months and MacKenzie revealed he could have fought Murray back in December.

But after getting back in to training a couple of weeks ago, the super-flyweight can’t wait to get in action.

He said: “Sam is one of the biggest promoters in the country and the support I’ve received from him and my team has been superb.

“I’ve kept myself going over Christmas and New Year and we’re getting right into the training camp now.

“I could have fought Ross back in December but our schedules didn’t match up.

“It’s good to get it all sorted now though and I’m looking forward to it.”

Tickets are available for next month’s fight night by searching for MGM Scotland on Ticketmaster.
